Mariampole (Lithuania) - basic information
History
The city lying on Sheshup grew out of the village of Poseshupye, which was first mentioned in historical sources in 1667. In the 18th century, the church village grew into the rank of a trading town of Starapol. After the monastery was built here, the city became known as Mariampole. On February 23, 1792, Mariampole received Magdeburg rights and became an important trading center of the region. At the end of the 19th century, Mariampole became the center of the Turkmen nationalist and educational movement. Here, well-known activists spread the ideas of restoring Lithuanian independence; they distributed the Lithuanian press, which was banned by the tsarist authorities. In 1918, after the restoration of Lithuania's independence, the intensive development of the city began.
Attractions
The city itself is devoid of major tourist attractions. Probably the only and most important object that deserves more attention is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which was modernized at the turn of the century and today is the cathedral of the Diocese of Wilko. Next to the church, you can also see the buildings of the eighteenth century former Marian Monastery. There is also a former gymnasium in Mariampol, built in the second half of the 19th century in the classical style, a noteworthy brick railway station building and an interesting museum of local lore. The city also has many monuments dedicated to famous figures from the history of this place. The surrounding nature also deserves attention. It impresses, first of all, with the richness and beauty of urban parks such as Poetry Park, Poszeszupie Park and Laguna Mariampol Park. There are several castle hills and many other historical sites in the vicinity of the city, and the Vishtynets Regional Park is a popular vacation destination.

Mariampole is not a big city, and it does not invite you on long-term excursions, but you can spend several weeks of vacation there, delving into nostalgic memories of the past, communicating with nature or enjoying various local attractions. Active recreation enthusiasts are invited to the Maryampole Stud, canoe and boat rentals, a rowing center, bowling, tennis courts, municipal pools, and a go-karting track.
